Noirlands
Noirlands was a movement born out of a need to fight against gentrification. We started with storytelling, and engaging community in traditions rooted in West African practices, true to the roots of New Orleans. Words from the griots of our time spoke to the collective consciousness of our brothers and sisters. But what started as words and story telling eventually moved into action and engagement off screen. Events, workshops, cross cultural exchanges, advocacy and development.
Organizing can only be done with context. And when we first sought to commence this project, our goal was to develop systems to limit gentrification. A loft goal for young people, however we raised awareness, and caught the ears of the organizers before us. Jennifer Turner was one of the first interviews ever done for the concept of “Noirlands” or black lands. She was the initial bridge to take us into the past, an encyclopedia of wisdom, lived and read. We honor her, he heed the lessons learned, and we move newly remembering our role In the greater movement for sovereignty. Thank you mama.
